“Mothers of History”
A segment from Talk of The Town’s Rewind, Season 2, Episode 4
Live streamed on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at 8pm EST/ 5pm PST
In celebration of Women’s History Month, Rewind paid tribute to brave Filipinas who, in various stages of Philippine history, not only joined, but led revolts, revolution and resistance.
We are joined in this show by students from the College of Mount Saint Vincent in New York City who will talk about women leaders who helped give birth and nurture the Filipino nation.
And speaking of the College of Mount Saint Vincent, did you know that CMSV is the alma mater of former Philippine President Corazon Aquino, the first woman President not only of the Philippines, but in Asia?
Here’s a quick look at our Mothers of History: Tandang Sora, Teresa Magbanua, Trinidad Tecson, Gabriela Silang and Carmen Rosales.
Rewind also paid homage to poet, fictionist and teacher Lilia Quindoza-Santiago, who passed away a month earlier. Lilia, or LQS to friends, taught at the University of the Philippines and at the University of Hawaii Manoa and authored more than 20 books.
Host Cris Godinez read the last stanza of her poem, “Sa Ngalan ng Ina, ng Anak, ng Diwata’t Paraluman” (In the name of the Mother, Daughter, Diwata at Paraluman).
“Kaya sa ngalan ng ina, anak,
Sa ngalan ng mga diwata’t paraluman,
I-adya ako sa paglibak ng minulan,
Basbasan aking pagsasalakay sa karawagan,
Pagpalin nawa ako sa taimtim na paglaban
Ngayon, hanggang katubusan.”
